Red-breasted Meadowlark, Leistes militaris, is a passerine of the family Icteridae that breeds from south-eastern Nicaragua through north-western Bolivia and north-central Brazil. It was once called the red-breasted blackbird, but it is not closely allied to the red-winged blackbird group. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1758 and is the only member of its kind recognised. It is linked with open country, including moist grassland, pasture and cultivated land, and it has expanded where forest has been cleared and ranching has created more open ground.
