Red-capped Parrot, Purpureicephalus spurius, breeds in southwestern Australia and is found in woodland and open savannah country there. It was described by Kuhl in 1820. This broad-tailed parrot is notable for its long bill, which sets it apart from other parrots. Adults have a bright crimson crown, green-yellow cheeks, dark green wings, back and long tail, and purple-blue underparts. The female is much like the male, though sometimes less vivid, and shows a white stripe beneath the wing. Young birds are mainly green.
