Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, Uraeginthus bengalus, is a passerine of the Estrildidae family that breeds across western, central and eastern Africa. It is a resident bird of drier tropical Sub-Saharan regions, and is common over much of central and eastern Africa. Its range runs from Senegal, Gambia and south-western Mauritania through to Ethiopia, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Zambia, Tanzania and northern Mozambique. It is also found in many habitats apart from forest interiors, from sea level to 2,430 m. A large domed grass nest with a side entrance is built in trees, bushes or thatch.
