Red-crested Korhaan

Lophotis ruficrista (Smith, A, 1836)

Red-crested Korhaan, Lophotis ruficrista, is a bustard of Africa, breeding from Angola and Namibia through Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa. It lives in dry savanna, bushveld, thorny scrubland and sometimes wet woodland, and it does not migrate. The male has gray-blue head feathering with reddish feathers on the nape, and during courtship the crown feathers lift into a crest while the throat and neck swell. Females and immatures have brown head feathers. The wings folded over the back show pale V-shaped markings, with black breast feathers and pale yellow legs.
