Red-flanked Lorikeet

Hypocharmosyna placentis (Temminck, 1835)

Red-flanked Lorikeet, Hypocharmosyna placentis, is a parrot of the Moluccas, New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago in Australasia. It occurs in moist lowland forest and mangrove forest. Adult males are marked by red plumage on the head and sides. The species was first described by Temminck in 1835. It was formerly included in Charmosyna before being placed in Hypocharmosyna after a molecular study in 2020. Five subspecies are recognised across North Maluku, Gebe Island, north-western New Guinea, the west Papuan Islands, Woodlark Island, Bougainville Island, the western Solomon Islands, South Maluku, the Aru Islands, southern New Guinea and eastern New Guinea.
