Red Grouse, Lagopus scotica, breeds in Britain and Ireland, where it is tied to heather moorland. It is a grouse in the pheasant family and was described by Latham in 1787. Also called moorcock, moorfowl or moorbird, it is the bird behind the name of British Birds and appears as the logo for The Famous Grouse whisky. The scientific name reflects feathered feet and toes in the genus, while scotica means of Scotland.
