Red Junglefowl

Gallus gallus

The Red Junglefowl, scientifically known as Gallus gallus, is a colorful bird species belonging to the Phasianidae family. Males are adorned with vibrant red, orange, and golden plumage, while females exhibit more subdued brown and buff colors. These birds are native to the dense tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where they forage for seeds, insects, and small animals on the forest floor. Red Junglefowl are known for their distinctive calls and are the wild ancestors of domestic chickens. They are adept at flying short distances and are skilled runners. Due to habitat loss and hybridization with domestic poultry, the conservation status of the Red Junglefowl is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
