Red-necked Nightjar

Caprimulgus ruficollis Temminck, 1820

Caprimulgidae — Nightjars

Red-necked Nightjar, Caprimulgus ruficollis, breeds in the Iberian Peninsula and north-west Africa and spends the non-breeding season in western Africa. It is a Palearctic nightjar in the family Caprimulgidae, described by Temminck in 1820. Among European nightjars it is the largest, and it is longer-tailed than the more widespread European nightjar. The adult has lichen-grey plumage with barring and streaking in buff, chestnut and black, plus a rufous neck-collar. Both sexes show white wing spots, tail sides and throat. It favours open sandy heaths with scattered trees or bushes.
