Red-necked spurfowl

Pternistis afer

The Red-necked spurfowl, also known as the Red-necked francolin, is a medium-sized bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is recognized by its distinctive red neck and chestnut plumage. These birds are often found in savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands, where they forage for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. Their call is a loud, repetitive 'kok-kok-kok' sound. The Red-necked spurfowl is known for its secretive nature, often running through dense vegetation to avoid predators. While their population is currently stable, habitat loss and hunting pose potential threats to their conservation status.
