Red-necked Stint

Calidris ruficollis

The Red-necked Stint is a small migratory shorebird that breeds in the tundra of northeastern Siberia and Alaska. During the non-breeding season, it can be found in coastal areas of Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. This species is known for its long migration, with some individuals traveling over 20,000 kilometers between breeding and non-breeding grounds. Red-necked Stints forage in shallow water and mudflats, using their long bills to probe for invertebrates. They are highly gregarious and often form large flocks during migration. Despite their small size, these birds are resilient and adaptable, thriving in a variety of coastal habitats.
