Red Owl, Tyto soumagnei, is a barn owl from north-western and eastern Madagascar in the family Tytonidae. It was described by Grandidier in 1878. It is a resident bird of the island and is closely similar to the barn owl, which may have led to it being overlooked. The species is also known as Madagascar red owl, Madagascar grass-owl, Soumagne's owl and lesser grass-owl. It occurs in humid evergreen forest and dry deciduous forest, including primary and secondary woodland, and has been recorded in tree cavities and along vegetated cliffs.
