Red-rumped Woodpecker

Veniliornis kirkii

The Red-rumped Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized woodpecker found in South America. It has distinctive red plumage on its rump, along with black and white barring on its back and wings. The male has a red crown, while the female has a black crown. This species is often found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, as well as in heavily degraded former forest. It forages for insects and larvae by pecking and drilling into tree bark. The Red-rumped Woodpecker is known for its rapid drumming on trees and is an important part of the forest ecosystem.
