Red Tanager, Piranga flava, is a passerine in the Cardinalidae family that breeds in South America from southern Guyana through eastern Brazil to Argentina. It was described by Vieillot in 1822. The species is also known from southern Suriname, northern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina and Uruguay through its recognised subspecies. It has been treated by some authorities as part of a wider hepatic tanager complex, but the IOC World Bird List recognises it as a separate species.
