Red-throated Diver

Dives dives

The Red-throated Diver, also known as the Red-throated Loon, is a medium-sized waterbird found in the Northern Hemisphere. It has a distinctive red throat patch and a sleek, slender body adapted for diving. During the breeding season, it can be found in freshwater lakes and ponds in boreal forests, while in the winter it migrates to coastal waters and estuaries. Its haunting wail is a characteristic sound of northern lakes and marshes. The Red-throated Diver is an expert fisher, using its webbed feet and streamlined body to propel itself underwater in search of prey.
