Red-winged Starling

Onychognathus morio

The Red-winged Starling is a medium-sized passerine bird native to southern Africa. It has a glossy black plumage with a distinctive red shoulder patch. This species is known for its melodious and varied song, often heard in open woodland and savanna habitats. Red-winged Starlings are social birds, often seen in large flocks foraging for insects and fruits. They are cavity nesters, using natural hollows in trees or man-made structures. Despite being common in its range, habitat loss and urbanization pose threats to its populations.
