Rifleman

Acanthisitta chloris

The Rifleman (Acanthisitta chloris) is a small, insectivorous bird native to New Zealand. It is known for its distinctive green plumage and tiny size, measuring around 8-9 centimeters in length. The Rifleman inhabits dense, damp forests and scrublands, where it forages for insects and spiders among the foliage and tree bark. This bird is highly territorial and often seen in pairs or family groups. Despite its small size, the Rifleman is known for its loud and melodious song, which it uses to communicate with other members of its species. While not currently considered threatened, the conservation status of the Rifleman is closely monitored due to potential habitat loss and introduced predators.
