Campephilus robustus (Lichtenstein, MHC, 1818)

Robust Woodpecker, Campephilus robustus, is a Picidae species that breeds in south-east Brazil, eastern Paraguay and north-east Argentina. It is a resident bird of humid forest and Araucaria moist forest, and it avoids disturbed woodland unless large trees are still present. A notable feature of the adult male is its wholly red head and neck, while the female lacks the ear-coverts spot and shows a pale stripe edged in black from bill to ear coverts. The species was described by Lichtenstein in 1818.
