Lagopus muta
The Rock Ptarmigan, scientifically known as Lagopus muta, is a medium-sized bird species belonging to the grouse family. It is well-adapted to cold environments, with its plumage changing from white in winter to mottled brown in summer, providing excellent camouflage. This bird is known for its distinctive red eyebrow-like patches above the eyes. Rock Ptarmigans are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plant matter, including buds, leaves, and seeds. They inhabit alpine and arctic tundra regions, often found at high elevations. During the breeding season, males display territorial behavior and vocalize to attract females. This species is well-suited to harsh, snowy environments and has evolved remarkable adaptations for survival in these challenging habitats.
