Rodrigues Scops Owl

Otus murivorus (Milne-Edwards, 1873)

Strigidae — Owls

Rodrigues Scops Owl, Otus murivorus, was an owl of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean, within the Mascarene Islands. It is now extinct. First described by Milne-Edwards in 1873, it belonged to the family Strigidae and the order Strigiformes. This island bird was one of the Mascarene owls and is now placed in Otus. It was a tree-dwelling owl that took small birds and lizards, and it gave the same call in settled weather. Its remains show an owl that had become much larger than its mainland ancestor.
