Rodrigues Solitaire

Fregilupus varius

The Rodrigues Solitaire, or Fregilupus varius, was a flightless bird endemic to the island of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. It was a member of the dodo family and was known for its large size and unique appearance. The Rodrigues Solitaire had a distinctive hooked beak and was primarily a ground-dwelling bird, feeding on fruits, seeds, and small invertebrates. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and hunting by humans, the species became extinct in the 18th century. It is a tragic example of the impact of human activity on vulnerable island species.
