Rodrigues Starling

Necropsar rodericanus

The Rodrigues Starling, scientifically known as Necropsar rodericanus, was a small, dark bird endemic to the island of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. It had a glossy black plumage with a distinctive yellow bill and legs. This species was known for its unique and melodious song, which contributed to its local popularity. The Rodrigues Starling inhabited forests and wooded areas, foraging for fruits, seeds, and insects. Unfortunately, this bird is now considered extinct, with the last confirmed sighting in 1726. The primary causes of its extinction were habitat destruction and predation by introduced species such as rats and cats.
