Buteo lagopus
The Rough-legged Hawk is a medium-sized raptor known for its distinctive feathered legs and feet, which help it thrive in its arctic and subarctic breeding grounds. During the breeding season, it can be found nesting on cliffs and in open tundra habitats, where it preys on small mammals such as lemmings and voles. In winter, it migrates to more southerly regions, favoring open fields, marshes, and coastal areas. This species is characterized by its broad wings and a dark belly band. Its plumage varies from light to dark morphs, with a mix of brown, black, and white feathers.
