Rufous-breasted Antpitta

Scytalopus opacus

The Rufous-breasted Antpitta is a small, secretive bird found in the Andes of South America. It is characterized by its rich rufous breast and belly, contrasting with a dark brown upper body. This species is known for its distinctive song, a series of clear whistles that echo through the dense undergrowth of its cloud forest habitat. Rufous-breasted Antpittas forage on the forest floor, feeding on insects and small invertebrates. They are often heard before they are seen, as they are skilled at remaining hidden among the thick vegetation. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the conservation status of this species is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
