Rufous Bristlebird

Dasyornis brachypterus

The Rufous Bristlebird (Dasyornis brachypterus) is a medium-sized, secretive bird found in the dense, shrubby habitats of southeastern Australia. It is characterized by its rufous-brown plumage, long, slender bill, and distinctive bristles around the base of its bill. This species is known for its skulking behavior, often remaining hidden in thick vegetation and emitting a loud, distinctive call. Rufous Bristlebirds primarily forage on the ground, feeding on insects, spiders, and seeds. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the population of Rufous Bristlebirds is declining, and they are considered vulnerable to extinction.
