Rufous Bristlebird

Dasyornis broadbenti

The Rufous Bristlebird (Dasyornis broadbenti) is a medium-sized, secretive bird found in dense coastal heathlands and shrublands of southeastern Australia. It is characterized by its distinctive rufous-brown plumage, long tail, and prominent bristles around the base of its bill. These birds are known for their skulking behavior, often foraging on the ground for insects and small invertebrates. They have a melodious and varied song, often heard during the breeding season. The Rufous Bristlebird is highly territorial and is known for its complex and elaborate courtship displays. Despite being locally common in some areas, habitat loss and degradation have led to population declines, and it is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
