Rufous Bristlebird

Amalocichla sclateriana

The Rufous Bristlebird (Amalocichla sclateriana) is a medium-sized, secretive bird species found in the dense undergrowth of coastal heathlands and shrublands of southeastern Australia. It has a distinctive rufous plumage with dark streaks, a long downturned bill, and a prominent white eye-ring. This species is known for its skulking behavior and loud, melodious calls that are often heard but the bird itself is rarely seen. Rufous Bristlebirds forage on the ground for insects and small invertebrates, and they build dome-shaped nests on the ground. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the Rufous Bristlebird is considered vulnerable and is a priority for conservation efforts.
