Rufous-capped Brushfinches are primarily insectivorous, foraging for insects, spiders, and small fruits. They are often found in mixed-species flocks and are known for their secretive nature, making them challenging to observe. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the conservation status of this species is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
