Rufous-collared Kingfisher

Tanysiptera danae

The Rufous-collared Kingfisher (Tanysiptera danae) is a striking bird found in the rainforests of New Guinea and nearby islands. This species is known for its vibrant plumage, including a rufous collar and a combination of blue, green, and white on its body. Rufous-collared Kingfishers are skilled hunters, often perching quietly before diving to catch insects, small reptiles, and even small birds. They are known for their distinctive calls, which echo through the dense rainforest. These kingfishers are typically found in the lower and middle canopy of the forest, near streams and rivers. While their population status is not well-documented, they are generally considered to be of least concern.
