Rufous Hummingbird

Selasphorus rufus

The Rufous Hummingbird is a small, migratory bird known for its brilliant orange-red plumage and remarkable agility in flight. These birds are commonly found in western North America during the breeding season, where they inhabit a variety of habitats including open woodlands, meadows, and gardens. Rufous Hummingbirds are known for their aggressive behavior and are often seen defending their feeding territories from other hummingbirds. They primarily feed on nectar from flowers and are important pollinators. During migration, they travel long distances, often crossing the Gulf of Mexico. Despite their widespread distribution, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and climate change.
