Rufous-legged Owl, Strix rufipes, breeds in south-central Chile and far western Argentina, reaching Tierra del Fuego. It is an owl of moist old-growth forest with a closed canopy and thick undergrowth, and it also uses older secondary forest and semi-open forest. The species is compact and lacks ear tufts, with a round head. Its plumage includes a rusty facial disk, white brows, dark brown eyes, reddish-brown upperparts and tail, and buffy feathers on the legs and toes. It nests in tree cavities, sometimes in old raptor nests, and may also nest on the ground.
