Rufous Motmot

Baryphthengus martii

The Rufous Motmot, scientifically known as Baryphthengus martii, is a striking bird found in the forests of Central and South America. It is known for its distinctive plumage, featuring a combination of rufous, green, and blue hues. This medium-sized bird is characterized by a unique racket-tipped tail and a broad, flattened bill. Rufous Motmots are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of insects, small reptiles, and fruits. They are often observed perched motionless in the forest understory, making occasional sallies to capture prey. These birds prefer dense, humid forests with a thick understory, where they can find suitable nesting sites and ample food resources. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the conservation status of the Rufous Motmot is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
