Rufous-necked Puffbird

Hypnelus ruficollis

The Rufous-necked Puffbird is a striking bird found in the tropical forests of South America. With its distinctive rufous-colored neck and a large head, it is easily recognizable. This species is known for its unique call, a series of deep, resonant hoots. Rufous-necked Puffbirds primarily feed on insects and small vertebrates, often perching motionless for long periods while waiting for prey. They are cavity nesters, using old woodpecker holes or natural tree hollows for nesting. This species is generally sedentary and can be found in lowland and foothill forests, where it prefers dense vegetation and canopy cover.
