Rufous-necked Wryneck

Jynx ruficollis

The Rufous-necked Wryneck is a small woodpecker found in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is known for its distinctive behavior of twisting its head and neck, resembling a snake, when threatened or disturbed. This species has a mottled brown and grey plumage with intricate patterns, providing excellent camouflage in its woodland habitat. Rufous-necked Wrynecks primarily feed on ants and other insects, using their long, sticky tongues to extract prey from crevices in tree bark. They are solitary birds and often remain hidden among the branches. Although not globally threatened, habitat loss and degradation pose potential risks to their populations.
