Rufous Owl

Otus rutilus

The Rufous Owl (Otus rutilus) is a medium-sized owl found in the forests and woodlands of Australia and Papua New Guinea. It has a distinctive rufous-brown plumage with prominent streaking on the underparts. This nocturnal bird of prey is known for its haunting hoots and is often found near water sources where it hunts for small mammals, birds, and insects. The Rufous Owl is a solitary and territorial species, nesting in tree hollows and laying 2-3 eggs. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and deforestation pose potential risks to its population.
