Rufous Pitohui

Pitohui cerviniventris

The Rufous Pitohui, scientifically known as Pitohui cerviniventris, is a small passerine bird native to New Guinea. It is best known for its unique defensive mechanism, as its skin and feathers contain powerful neurotoxins, making it one of the few known poisonous birds. This species is predominantly insectivorous, foraging in the forest canopy for insects and other small invertebrates. The Rufous Pitohui is often found in montane and lowland rainforests, where it can be observed foraging and singing from the treetops. Its plumage is predominantly rufous with black and white markings, providing excellent camouflage within its forest habitat.
