Rufous Sparrow

Passer ammodendri

The Rufous Sparrow (Passer ammodendri) is a small, passerine bird found in arid and semi-arid regions of North Africa and the Middle East. It is characterized by its rufous and gray plumage, with a distinctive black bib on the throat of the male. These sparrows are often found in open desert habitats, including sandy or rocky areas with scattered shrubs and low vegetation. They are known for their melodious and repetitive songs, often heard during the breeding season. The Rufous Sparrow primarily feeds on seeds and insects, foraging on the ground and in low vegetation. While not currently assessed by the IUCN, their populations may face threats from habitat loss and degradation.
