Rufous-tailed Jacamar

Electron carinatum

The Rufous-tailed Jacamar is a striking bird found in the tropical forests of South America. It is known for its vibrant plumage, with a glossy green head, bright rufous throat, and a long, slender bill. This species is often observed perched motionless on a high branch, waiting to catch flying insects with its swift and agile flight. Rufous-tailed Jacamars are cavity nesters, excavating burrows in earthen banks or termite nests. They are highly territorial and will defend their nesting sites vigorously. These birds play an important role in their ecosystem by controlling insect populations. However, they are vulnerable to habitat loss and deforestation.
