Rufous-tailed Jacamar

Histurgops ruficauda

The Rufous-tailed Jacamar is a striking bird found in Central and South America. It has a distinctive combination of green upperparts, a rufous tail, and a long, slender bill. This species is typically found in lowland forests, often near water, where it perches quietly while hunting for flying insects. Rufous-tailed Jacamars are known for their distinctive call, a high-pitched 'pee-pee-pee' sound. They are cavity nesters, excavating holes in earthen banks for their nests. These birds are highly territorial and often seen in pairs or small family groups.
