Rufous-thighed Hawk
Accipiter erythronemius (Kaup, 1850)
Accipitridae — Kites, Hawks, Eagles
Rufous-thighed Hawk, Accipiter erythronemius, breeds in south-eastern Bolivia and southern Brazil, and also in Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina. It is a small accipiter hawk of tropical and subtropical lowlands and highlands. It is close in appearance to the Sharp-shinned Hawk, but the upperparts are darker, the underparts show rufous or dusky streaking, the cheeks often carry a clear rufous patch, and the iris is yellow. Its breeding range does not overlap with that of the Sharp-shinned Hawk, and its taxonomic status remains unsettled.
