Rufous-winged Sparrow, Peucaea carpalis, is a passerine of the New World sparrows that breeds in south-west USA and north-west Mexico. It was described by Coues in 1873. The bird is tied to the Sonoran and Sinaloan deserts, but avoids the driest ground. In Arizona it uses mesquite grassland, while in Mexico it also occupies grassy thorn scrub, riparian places such as irrigation channels, and mangroves near the coast. Its wing coverts are cinnamon-rufous, the feature that gives the species its English name.
