Rusty Blackbird

Euphagus carolinus

The Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus) is a medium-sized blackbird with a glossy black plumage that appears rusty in non-breeding season. This species is known for its distinctive call and behavior, often foraging in wetlands and wooded swamps. During breeding season, the male's plumage becomes glossy black with bright yellow eyes. Rusty Blackbirds are migratory birds, breeding in the boreal forests of North America and wintering in the southeastern United States. Unfortunately, this species has experienced significant population declines, likely due to habitat loss and degradation of wetland habitats. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore suitable breeding and wintering habitats for the Rusty Blackbird.
