Rusty Sparrow, Aimophila rufescens, is a passerine of the family Passerellidae that breeds in Middle America from north-west Mexico to north-west Costa Rica. It is a year-round resident across that range. The species was first described by Swainson in 1827. It lives in pine-oak forest, scrub, shrubby openings in deciduous woodland, secondary scrub, and pine savanna in tropical to lower temperate areas. In Costa Rica it is tied to grassy slopes with boulders, thick shrubs and small trees. It is also recorded from a broad spread of elevations, from sea level up to 2,700 m.
