Sage Grouse

Centrocercus urophasianus (Bonaparte, 1827)

Phasianidae — Pheasants & Allies

Sage Grouse, Centrocercus urophasianus, is a grouse of North America, breeding from southern Canada into the western United States. It is found in sagebrush country across that range. Once treated as the only sage grouse, it is now separated from the Gunnison sage-grouse. It is the largest grouse in North America. The bird uses a complex lek system for mating and nests on the ground beneath sagebrush or in grass patches. It remains in its breeding areas, though it may shift to lower ground in winter.
