Sahel Paradise Whydah, Vidua orientalis, is a resident breeding bird of the Sahel in western, central and north-eastern Africa. It belongs to the Viduidae family and was described by Heuglin in 1870. It lives in open acacia savannah with scattered trees. The species is a brood parasite of the green-winged pytilia, using its nests rather than making its own. Two subspecies are recognised, with ranges that run from Senegal and Gambia east to Eritrea and north to Chad and Cameroon.
