Lophura pyronota
Salvadori's pheasant (Lophura pyronota) is a striking bird native to the mountainous forests of New Guinea. The male is adorned with vibrant iridescent blue and green plumage, with a distinctive red patch on its back. The female is more subtly colored, with mottled brown and black feathers. These pheasants are known for their elusive nature and are often found foraging on the forest floor for seeds, fruits, and insects. They are monogamous birds and build their nests on the ground, well-hidden among the dense undergrowth. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the conservation status of Salvadori's pheasant is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
