Sanford's Sea Eagle

Sanford's Sea Eagle, Icthyophaga sanfordi, is a bird of the Solomon Islands, breeding from Buka to Makira. It lives in coastal forests and around lakes, reaching elevations of about 1500 m. This sea eagle is the only large predator on the islands. It has an entirely dark tail throughout its life, which sets it apart from other sea eagles. The species was first described by Ernst Mayr in 1935 and is named for Dr Leonard C. Sanford.
