Laniidae — Shrikes

Sao Tome Fiscal, Lanius newtoni, is a shrike found on São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea, where it is endemic to the island. It was described by Barboza du Bocage in 1891. It belongs to the family Laniidae and the order Passeriformes. The bird is usually encountered beneath closed canopy in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. It is marked by black upperparts with a white shoulder-scapular bar, and pale yellow on the chin, breast, belly, flanks, vent and under tail. Its tail is graduated, with black central feathers and increasing white on the outer feathers.
