Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Veniliornis callonotus, is a woodpecker of south-west Colombia, western Ecuador and north-west Peru. It belongs to the family Picidae and breeds across this South American range. The bird is marked by its scarlet-brown upperparts, with males showing red on the head from forehead to nape and females having a black head in that same area. It lives in arid scrub, dry deciduous woodland, semi-humid forest, dense riverside forest and some partly cleared places. It is a year-round resident and usually feeds on small branches and thin twigs, often in pairs.
