Sclater's Crowned Pigeon

Sclater's Crowned Pigeon, Goura sclaterii, lives in south-eastern New Guinea, outside the Trans-Fly. It is a ground-dwelling pigeon of lowland forest. The bird has bluish-grey plumage, an ornate blue crest, a red iris and a very dark maroon breast. Males and females look alike. Tommaso Salvadori described it in 1876 and gave it the name now in use. It was once treated as the same species as Scheepmaker's crowned pigeon, and it was also known as the southern crowned pigeon.
