Scribble-tailed Canastero, Asthenes maculicauda, is a bird of the Furnariidae family that breeds in southern Peru, Bolivia and north-western Argentina. It is a resident species in the Andes, where it occupies páramo grassland close to the tree line. The two known populations are separated, one in Puno and west-central Bolivia, the other between southern Jujuy and north-western Catamarca. It is notable for the distinctive pattern on the pointed feathers of its long tail. The sexes look alike, and juveniles show a duller forehead, more mottled underparts and a less marked tail pattern.
